Our show is coming soon. Do you want an expert eye to advise on the quilting design for your entry quilt? Or do you have "unfinished objects" waiting a final decision? This is a must take workshop if you hesitate before starting to quilt. Discover what types of quilting patterns are appropriate for patchwork and for appliqué tops. Learn how easy it is to make any quilting pattern fit your quilt. Helen Squire offers her suggestions both for hand and machine quilting and will discuss good work habit and easier design steps for creating your own quilting patterns. Bring an unfinished quilt top for classroom discussion.
SUPPLIES:
- Students will be provided with the quilting design booklet. No other small supplies are required.
- A small stapler and paper scissors are optional items briefly used in class.

Here's your chance to discover how to individualize your quilts.
Patricia Rodgers will give the complete lowdown on Threads,
Stabilizers and Needles and will cover several different types of
free-motion work on muslin “sandwiches.” No pressure, but
time to practice with tips on how to improve and expand machine
skills, understand stabilizers and build confidence in using
metallics and other decorative Sulky threads. This is a
skill-builder class, as well as learning about needles, threads,
stabilizers and more.
SUPPLIES:
- All you bring is a zigzag sewing machine
that can drop the feed dogs along with a darning or free motion
foot to do free motion techniques.

Down to the Finish

Philippa Naylor will share her award winning techniques so you can get
the best possible finish to your quilts. The edges, if well sewn, make such a difference to the look of a piece (and a judge's opinion) and the piping is particularly lovely, adding another splash of color. Hopefully every quilt in the show will be beautifully finished off!
This practical workshop will allow you to make a variety of samples including beautiful mitered borders, contrasting fabric covered piping, the neatest double folded binding, a hanging sleeve and so much more! Some techniques are inspired by couture and can make your quilt a winner. Empire Quilters members are encouraged to get in touch by email if they have any queries, however small.
SUPPLIES
- General purpose swing thread
- Five different fat quarters
- Three quilt sandwiches with cotton batting. Minimum size 16" x 8".
- Needles for machine and hand sewing
- Rotary cutter and mat
- Ruler 18" long minimum
- Square minimum 6" or quilters' triangular ruler
- A 1" x 6" ruler
- Pins
- Tape Measure
- Scissors for fabric and thread cutting

Two Days with Nancy Eha — Beader Extraordinaire

Day One: Organic Beading ($60 for one day only)
This workshop is for art quilters and anyone desirous of
embellishing quilts in a very special way. Come and
experiment with beaded form and texture. Go beyond your
understanding of sewing beads on fabric. Explore dimensional
fabric beading techniques developed by Nancy Eha. Learn sticky
lollipops, beaded coils, attaching cabochons with beads and
more! Leave with a unique abstract/organic creation while
learning and applying a myriad of textural beading techniques on
your small art quilt. All experience levels. SUPPLIES: The kit includes all beads, coil, cabochon, thread, needles.
Day Two: Beaded Kaleidoscopes ($80 for one day only)
Who doesn't enjoy looking into a
Kaleidoscope and seeing the wondrous interplay of colors? You, too
can recreate your own dazzling spectacle with glass beads in numerous design possibilities. Explore Nancy Eha's discovery: Elevated Beading. Learn how to create elevated lines with seed beads placed not directly on the fabric, but supported above the fabric surface for a textural 3D appearance. The finished kaleidoscope is 5-inches in diameter. All experience levels. SUPPLIES:
The kit includes all beads, Swarovrski crystals, thread, needles, pattern.

Consider this as a play day to explore your artistic side. Sue Dennis
promises a gentle class for those wishing to explore original
design work but don’t know where to start. During the day you
will create one or more small quilt tops using easy design
exercises. Use of color, design principles and cut and paste
methods will be explained before you cut your fabric and fuse a
design in place. No stress. This is a day to have fun! NO sewing
machine needed!
SUPPLIES:
- Notebook or visual diary
- 12" ruler, pen
6 sheets colored paper
- Glue stick, paper scissors
- Color wheel
- 1 fat quarter background fabric (dark is best)
- Fabrics to contrast with background - brights, prints, etc.
- 1/2 yd white for cutting strips
- 1/2 yd fusible
- Non-stick baking paper or appliqué mat
- Rotary cutter and mat + 24" quilt ruler
- Pins, fabric scissors
- Chalk marker or soap sliver
- Spyglass (peep hole viewer)
- Iron and ironing mat
- Name tag
