Turbulence!

Instructor: Linda Warren

Date: Sunday, June 10, 2012

Time: 10:00 am – 5:00 pm

Location: Tina Barth's loft - 130 West 28 St, 5th Floor (between 6th and 7th Avenue) [ Map ]
New York , NY 10001 (New location for June)

Cost: $60.00

Sign up: To reserve your place in this workshop, send a check made out to Empire Quilters to Mary Butler. Contact info@empirequilters.net if you need Mary's address.

Linda Warren's full day workshop dissects the artist's Turbulence quilt. This fascinating illusion of motion, curves, and transparency is achieved with one block! Use easy rotary cutting and chain piecing. No templates, no curves, no special rulers. Linda will enlarge your quilt repertoire with a discussion of color and pattern choices. Please note that there are several steps to complete before attending the workshop. Please direct questions to Linda Warren at: iqquilts@yahoo.com

The following should be completed before the workshop (for a wall hanging of approximately 40" X 40"):
  • Choose  NINE different fabrics, four in one color family (A), four in a contrasting color family (B), and one that will stand out from the others (C). (NOTE: The pattern says 1/2 yard each A and B, which allows for cutting errors or extra narrow fabrics. If you cut carefully, you can get the required five 8" squares from 1/4 yard, NOT one fat quarter.)
    • Color A
      • A1 / A2: Light or medium light, 1/4 yd each
      • A3 / A4: Dark or medium dark, 1/4 yd each
    • Color B
      • B1 / B2: Light or medium light, 1/4 yd each
      • B3 / B4: Dark or medium dark, 1/4 yd each
    • Color C
      • C Background, 1 yard (includes enough for a narrow border)
      • For binding in C, purchase an extra 1/2 yard
  • A and B fabrics can be large or small prints. Avoid directional prints. For more depth and interest, choose some A fabrics with a little of color B and/or some B fabrics with a little of color A. Fabric C can be the same color as B or A, as long as it contrasts sharply in value (either much darker or much lighter.) It should read as solid.
  • Pre-wash, dry and press all fabrics
  • Put new needle in machine
  • Wind two bobbins
  • Cut five 8” squares from each fabric A1, A2, A3, A4, B1, B2, B3, and B4
  • Cut one 2⅛” strip C. Cut the strip into 2⅛” squares
  • The final cutting will be done later. Bring all fabrics to class

    SUPPLIES (to bring to workshop):
  • Machine with manual
  • Cutting mat
  • Cutter
  • Square ruler at least 8"
  • Medium value, neutral color thread that will blend with your fabrics
  • Fabrics as described above, including pre-cut pieces and leftover fabric
  • Turbulence" pattern
  • Optional: To make a Bed-size Quilt (75” x 81” plus borders), the total yardage requirements are:
    • 1 yard each of A1, A2, A3, A4, B1, B2, B3, and B4 fabrics (see above for description)
    • 3 yards of C. This includes enough for a narrow inner border C
