2011 Raffle Quilt — Subway Series Our 2011 Raffle Quilt made its first appearance at the June 12, 2010 guild meeting, and was raffled at our 2011 Urban Inspirations Show in March of 2011. Sonia Rieber was the lucky winner of this fabulous piece. Congratulations, Sonia! The Subway Series quilt celebrates many of the beautiful and unique subway stations in the City of New York. The 91" x 111" quilt was designed by guild member Mary Cargill and the blocks were appliquéd by many guild members. Click on the picture below for a larger view of the quilt, and details of the blocks.
The individual blocks in the quilt represent some of the oldest subway stations in New York and are iconic of our rich history. The beaver at Astor Place for John Jacob Astor who made his fortune in the beaver trade, Wall Street's actual wall, Fulton Street's Steamboat, Grand Central's locomotive, Brooklyn Bridge's eagle, Union Square's crossroads, Brooklyn's Borough Hall and Manhattan's City Hall represent the symbols of the vital city that New York has been throughout its history. The quilt is based on traditional Baltimore Album quilts. In this tradition, the names of each of the subway stations as well as the quilter are on each of the blocks. We invite you to take a close look at the quilt and the individual blocks.
