Symmetry and Surprise: The Kaleidoscope as Design Inspiration

KALEIDOSCOPE — the very word promises surprise and magic, change and chance. Exploding with visual excitement, a kaleidoscopic design organizes an abundance of color and shape into a complex, coherent and unique whole. This slide lecture traces my evolving quilt series in which the multifaceted, luminous and random nature of a kaleidoscope is explored on a quilt's flat surface.

Paula Nadelstern is a native New Yorker who has inspired thousands of artists with her award-winning designs. Her books include Kaleidoscopes & Quilts, Snowflakes & Quilts, Puzzle Quilts: Simple Blocks, Complex Fabrics and Paula Nadelstern's Kaleidoscope Quilts, An Artist's Journey Continues Kaleidoscope Quilts by Paula Nadelstern (to be published in the fall of 2008). This busy artist also designs fabrics for Benartex, Inc.

Paula is an exciting and enthusiastic teacher who travels the world sharing her kaleidoscopic quiltmaking techniques and design concepts. She has received numerous awards for her work which has appeared in solo exhibits at the Museum of the American Quilters Society, the Houston International Quilt Festival and in Japan. One of her quilts appeared in the Twentieth Century's 100 Best American Quilts exhibits, and she was the recipient of multiple fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts.

Sunday March 22, 2009 1:00 pm: Brenda Papadakis

Brenda Manges Papadakis is a quilt teacher, designer, mathematician and student of women's history. She is perhaps best known as author of Dear Jane: The Two Hundred Twenty-Five Patterns from the 1863 Jane A. Stickle Quilt. With this book, Brenda launched a phenomenal following of Dear Jane quilt enthusiasts. Over 79,000 copies of the book have been sold, and quilts in the manner of Jane A. Stickle are being created daily.

Brenda is also the author of Dear Hannah: In the Style of Jane Stickle, where she continues her personal correspondence approach by using letters to her granddaughter, Hannah, to teach about women's struggles for recognition and equal status throughout the last two centuries. In all of her works, Brenda weaves together an appreciation not only for those who came before, but also for those who are just entering into the world of quilting.

Our 2009 Show Raffle Quilt Broadway Jane is a quilt is from Brenda Papakdais's Dear Jane patterns.
