Sylvia Zeveloff (1926–2008) began sewing at age 13, making her own clothes. She made her first quilt, a “Grandmother's Garden Quilt,” by hand, in the 1950's. About 1986 Sylvia went to Monticello, Mt. Vernon where she saw a brochure for a near-by quilt store. She visited and fell in love with the fabric. Sylvia was a quiltmaker ever since that experience.

Initially Sylvia produced numerous traditional quilts — everyone in her immediate family received one. Eventually she began designing her own quilts. She studied with Nancy Crow in 1987. Sylvia made mostly pieced quilts as well as some appliqué and liked embellishment too! In 1997 she had a quilt exhibited in Paducah! Sylvia was one of Empire Quilters original quilters of the month.

Sylvia was also a painter. She began painting in the 1960's — primarily watercolor landscapes. She taught watercolor painting at the New School, and Institute For Retired Persons. Originally from New York, Sylvia moved across the country four times.

Sylvia was our guild president 2004–2006. She passed away in May, 2008, and we all miss her very much. Her enthusiasm, kindness, and love of quilting (and quiltmakers!) will continue to inspire us.
