Fabric Colors: gold, burnt orange, four bright colors for the hearts

Instructions:

  • Start with one gold center square of 2½ inches x 2½ inches.
  • Cut four gold strips of 1½ inches x 2½ inches.
  • Cut 8 burnt orange squares 1½ x 1½.
  • Use two 1½ inch burnt orange squares for each of the four gold strips to make four flying geese (see Figure 1).

  • Figure 1

  • Sew one flying geese to opposite sides of the center square.
  • Cut four gold squares 1½ x 1½ inches.
  • Sew one gold 1½ x 1½ inch square to opposite sides of the remaining two flying geese. You should now have a 4½ x 4½ inch square.
  • Cut two gold 2½ x 4½ inch rectangles and sew to opposite sides of the 4½ x 4½ inch square.
  • Cut two gold 2½ x 8½ inch rectangles and sew to top and bottom of the remaining sides to finish the block at 8½ x 8½ inches.

For the hearts:

  • Iron a 2½ x 2½ inch square piece of each of the four bright colors to a piece of Steam-a-Seam. Cut each of the four squares into the heart shape shown here and machine appliqué to each of the four corners extending the point o fthe heart into the corner of the smaller 4½ x 4½ inch square.
  • If you wish to hand appliqué the hearts, be sure to add a seam allowance to the heart pattern.
