A Star for Flag Day

9½ inch unfinished block (9" finished block)

Fabric: Red, White and blue

Instructions:

  • Cut 4 red squares at 3½ x 3½ inches
  • Cut 2 white square at 3½ x 3½ inches
  • Cut 2 blue and 2 red squares at 3 7/8 x 3 7/8 inches
  • Place 1 red and 1 blue square right sides together. Draw a line diagonally across from corner to corner. Sew ¼ inch on either side of this line. Cut in half on the line to make 2 half square triangles. Sew the same way with the second red and blue squares to make a second set of half square triangles. Measure and trim, if necessary, to ensure a 3½ x 3½ inch half square triangle.
  • Sew one red square to one half square triangle on one side and a second red square on the other side. Then sew one half square triangle to the white square and the second half square triangle to the other side of the white square. Take the next red square and sew it to the last half square triangle and the last red square to the other side.
  • Sew the strip with the red square, the half square triangle and the red square to the half square triangle, the white square and the half square triangle. Lastly, sew this section to the last strip of red square, half square triangle and red square.
