Pastel Flowers for May

5½ inch unfinished block (5" finished block)

There are two variations to choose from this month — a simple pattern and a more complex pattern.

Fabric: Use any pastel fabric, with or without a print, for a nice spring effect.

There are a number of ways to put the pattern onto the fabric:

  1. Use either a lightbox or a window so that you can see the pattern through the fabric and then trace the pattern onto the right side of the fabric.
  2. Iron fabric to freezer paper. Trim to 8½" x 11" and feed through your printer making a copy of the pattern on the fabric. Be sure that the pattern is printed onto the right side of the fabric.
  3. Use dressmaking tracing paper to trace the pattern onto the right side of the fabric.

Use a dark blue "thread" to sew the pattern. I used two strands of embroidery floss for one sample and I doubled polyester embroidery thread for another sample. Heavy quilting thread would also be nice to use for the outline of the flower.

The stitching is similar to Sashiko stitching or embroidery stitching. The thread should cover the printed outline on the fabric.
